Boxed Deck Submission: Lang Box Short
(via Matt Lang) This is my favourite submission to the boxed deck challenge so far. Good: Presenting the deck, with neat twirls AND grips. Provides a nice “stage” for the deck. The “Cross-Thrus” part was definitely one of my favourites. Was just really cool to see, especially with the deck floating in the background. Finger twirl. Especially the cut towards the end of the...

Boxed Deck Submission: "One Deck"
So here is one of the first submissions I received. Good: Arm roll. Going to the drum beat to finish it off. Eager to get a submission going FAST, really cool. Flipping the deck in the air to the back of the hand. Bad: Too many flipbacks, without purpose. I think many of us feel that since the flipback is easy to do and we see it all the time, it’s lost a bit of meaning to us. But to laymen,...

Wynn Cards -- at $5 or less
There’s been a little recent clamoring over Wynn cards thanks to theory11. Apparently they’ve been going for $40-50 on eBay. theory11 just started selling them for $4.95 a piece or less if you buy in bulk, just like the Guardians. I personally haven’t tried ‘em yet, but I think Dan and Dave like ‘em (maybe they’ll talk about this). It sucks that they’re...

Comments!
Now this blog is great because I get to express myself in rambling forms, and I get to cover a lot of ground without having to spend a lot of time on other things. But the bad thing about it before was that there was no good way for you to give feedback or give a reply. So I’m trying out this neat comment system thing. Give it a shot! And say hi, while you’re at it.

Master Tweakster
It’s amazing to see people tweak their messages in “covert” responses ;) Whoever claims to have “invented” clubs for cardistry should be given a good smack. What nobody has seen is official support for clubs. I’m still not seeing it. There should be guidelines for a club, helpful tips. Also it should NOT be a shrine devoted to a specific person, but rather be...

Videos are coming in
So videos have started to come in now, maybe around 4. Curiously, some of the videos are mostly what I ranted against. I think maybe people saw “free decks” and then just made a video. But either way, it’s great to see that kind of desire to do something cool, and that kind of interest in the art. I got another video where the moves are really appropriate, but somehow seemed like...

Jerry's in on it
I wasn’t able to listen to the show, so I don’t know how it came about, but Jerry’s contest for this week is in fact to do something with a boxed deck! His deadline is typically a week, so those of you who think you can prove me wrong better do so quickly!

Not too long after posting that bit about local cardistry clubs it seems somebody’s gone ahead and posted that they’re willing to officially support clubs (in fact pushing people to start some!). Hopefully the motive is not to beat me to some punch but to actually help with groups, but I’m glad progress is being made :) I know sometimes things are said just to try and beat...
Local cardistry clubs?
I’m thinking mostly like in university. They’ve got tons of clubs, so do some high schools. Has anybody ever set up a local cardistry club where people get together weekly or whatever and just jam, explore new concepts, talk about the latest releases… Doesn’t have to be in some educational facility either, I mean there are tons of magician “rings” all over the...

"Boxed deck" challenge interest
Turns out there’s been more interest than I expected for the “boxed deck” challenge. I’m looking forward to what people come up with! I’ve already had one person send a video over… What I am finding surprising though is that half the questions people ask are already answered. Yikes. This happens to be a big problem on forums. Somebody makes a post, next person...

Why do people comment on videos, write a rating for the video in their comment, and then not actually rate the video? It’s just one click… weird. It’s fairly common too, actually.

Challenge (win free decks): Manipulate a boxed...
Continuing on my last post… Honestly, right now I can’t see there being a very impressive routine that just includes the boxed deck, where the cards never go in or out. Think I’m wrong? Prove it. Send me a routine involving a boxed deck, and never take the cards in or out. I don’t care how long it is, but it has to be a routine (so generally a series of moves). Also, as a...

Manipulating the deck inside the box
People who are new to cardistry tend to enjoy one thing: big, extravagant movements. Often they’ll make large sweeping gestures with their arms when to make up for the fact that the deck is not doing much work. One example I came across recently in the submission queue is manipulating a full deck… inside the box. OMG CRAAAZY!……. NOT! (oh no he didn’t just do that)...

Magician set up at the bar/club
No joke. At one of the clubs I went to last night, there was a magician with table set up in an active corner doing close-up tricks… cups & balls, and some other stuff. Some of it really surprised me. Really nice guy, I think he was into cardistry for a while too (before people started calling it cardistry). Works at the magic shop across the street. Was just really interesting to see...

De'vo rants about "invention" vs. "discovery" →
It gets funny to read, but the main point he’s getting at is totally true. Mind you newbies are doing it with the best intentions. It’s probably not best to bite their head off and ban them for making this mistake, but rather inform them like this post does. I think we’ve all probably made this mistake when we were first starting. But you’re excited and you want to get out...

It was too dark to get any video haha… but good times were definitely had. It’s amazing how people flip out on a one-handed revolution cut..

Friday night fun
Going out for a university night of… partying. Wallet? Check. Phone? Check. Smell decent? As far as I can tell. Cards? Check. Camera? Check.

Lack of colour
The lack of colour here is bugging me a bit. Will have to figure out how to fix that.

theory11 holiday contest: crazy prizes
theory11 just posted the details on the 2007 holiday contest. 11 prizes to be won of course, but these three really struck my eye:8. 1-on-1 Live : One Hour Online Jam Session via Live Video Conference with the theory11 artist of your choice. 10. Be the star : Win the chance to have the theory11 production team produce and edit a video YOU shoot (of flourishing OR magic) to be posted in...

"I suck" psyche out? Good or bad?
Bad, especially when the viewer has a short attention. “Oh, this person can’t do a one-handed cut. I’m going to watch something else.” Who are you trying to fool? What’s the purpose? You’re not trying to trick the person that you SUCK. The right way to do it is to trick the person that the simple moves are the hard moves. It’s very different. For instance,...

Declining videos isn't very fun
It’s going to happen. Videos don’t make the cut. I tend to judge them on guidelines that I’ve never actually listed out, so it’s easy to understand why people submit these kinds of videos. But anyways, just because a video doesn’t make the cut doesn’t mean the person didn’t spend a lot of time on their video. Newbies are pretty much guaranteed to not get...

Filming locations - get 20m away from your house!
Just came across another media submission of somebody in his backyard. *Sigh* Now I have said and I still firmly believe people should get OUT OF THEIR HOUSE when filming. What I mean by that is that I don’t want to hear your family, see your dog, or your family portraits, or see your messy room. But the point I’m getting at is that your environment should be interesting and should...

Reuniting via theory11
No kidding. A friend of mine from 6th grade just found me… through theory11. That’s pretty crazy. theory11’s pretty big… I don’t know if it’s because of Maxim or if he’s into magic though.

TNR
I just saw the full preview of TNR which comes out this Friday on theory11. Wow this sounds like an ad already. Anyways, I gotta say I’m impressed. It looks like it’d be a great thing to perform, looking forward to this one. I hope it’ll hit my expectations (which can get way too high)!

working on theory11
So I’m working on a new feature for theory11 — a notification system that will inform you when people comment on your videos and when people reply to your own comments. Recently I made some changes and went to sleep, got up 10 hours later and had 4 messages how the theory11 media system was done. Whoops! So now I’m working on rigging up a test server so I don’t do that...

Getting back into it
By the way, still planning on getting back into the performing game by actually practicing some new moves now. So much time spent focusing on the communities… and then people seem to really appreciate the VorteX Sequence video I posted (will try sharing it here). Simple stuff but they like the style, which I dig. I think it’s important. I got a lot of work to do, though…
Welcome
I’m thinking of starting a blog about cardistry and wicked stuff like that. What’s going on, with the websites I work on, with the trends that are happening, what can be seen in the future… we’ll see if this blog actually catches on and if I actually post on it in the first place.
