Boxed Deck Submission by UnknownEnemyZero
Yup, another entry to the boxed deck challenge.
This one comes from UnknownEnemyZero, who I remember from years back.
WHAT I LIKED:
The song. I love the song. The first thing I did after watching this video was look for it on iTunes but it wasn’t there! Any tips?
The twirls (and there were many of them) were smooth as SILK (not butter) and were a pleasure to watch. This is the kinda thing where it’s not speed that makes the move, but the fluidity!
The twirl to the stand on the back of your hand is great and a great moment to present the deck! I wish it would have been held in place for just a tiny bit longer though to really give it a nice pause.
I really liked the flipback, then non-aerial flip from one hand to the other.
Catching underneath the leg is a better move than catching it normally. So I’m glad you put that in there.
TO IMPROVE:
Present the deck at the beginning! It seems most entries forget to do this. Is it because we’re all used to what we’re working with? Is it because our playing card boxes just look awful, for the most part? (Let’s be honest… the Tally-Ho box isn’t exactly an iPhone).
While the twirls were very fluid and well-connected, I think it went on for too long without enough variation. The “bouncing” on the leg in this case didn’t seem harder just a bit of a variation. Maybe working on making it look more like a realistic bounce will help? (Acceleration down, and deceleration back up).
The ending could be improved. You actually ended on a move you had already done, which seems a bit odd. Though it is good you paused to show the deck was there, it also leaves you at a great place to go on to whatever other routine you wanted.
Most of these moves can be be done with a standard deck of cards… which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but would be nice to see for a targeted boxed deck routine! That being said, again, the non-aerial flipping between the hands was a good example of doing this, as well as the stand on the back of your hand.
FINALLY:
The background also seemed to fit somehow with the overall style of the video, which was nice too. One thing that crossed my mind is it seems like it wouldn’t have taken that much effort to make the background nearly totally symmetrical… just move the camera a bit to the side?
Overall a good submission, and a potential for a winner, but I feel you could easily improve your video!
